You want to make your dreams to go to space a reality?

Space is such a vast and unfathomable concept with enough room for an infinite amount of interpretations. From small office spaces, to the great expanse of our universe! But with your help, you can help us make sense of it all, by transforming and capturing your dolls to showcase what space means to you!

So, let’s adjust your ISO, change your aperture, It’s time to amaze us with your compositions for the 2023 SMASH! BJD Competition!

Prizes

BJD Photography Competition:

  • Winner: Prize Pool: Prize Pool ($128.00 – $180.00 AUD)
    • 2 Dress Sets
  • Runner-Up: Prize Pool ($64.00 – $90.00 AUD)

NOTE: You will be able to select the dress set awarded on the day of arrival/ on request.

  • These prizes are always interchangeable, SMASH! holds the right to remove prizes that are listed and holds the ability to adjust them at will.
  • Prizes are non-transferable, not redeemable for cash.
  • The Organiser and Sponsors reserve the right to substitute the prizes, or a component of the prize, with another product of equal or greater value at any time without prior notice.
  • All entrants who wish to receive SMASH! BJD Competition prizes MUST have a postal address within Australia.
    • If an Australian mailing address cannot be provided, the applicant will not be eligible to receive prizes from our competitions.
  • Winners must collect their prizes at the BJD Info Desk by the end of con on Sunday after the winner announcements in the Industry Competitions Winner Panel at the Darling Square Stage 3pm.
  • Winners will be announced at the Arts Industry Panel on Sunday 3:00 PM at the Arts Stage, so please make sure you come see it!

Judging Criteria

Submitted works will be judged on the following:

  • Execution: technical expertise and mastery of the medium you are using.
  • Concept: originality of your concept in adherence to the given theme.
  • Aesthetics: how well your skill is applied to capture your concept and the overall visual appeal of your work.

Who Can Apply?

  • This competition is for everyone of all ages!
  • You can submit works you have already made public if they match the theme and piece requirements.
  • SMASH! Staff and Crew are allowed to enter their works in any of the Art competitions; however, under no circumstances will special consideration be given to any entrant during the judging and selection process.

Submission Terms & Conditions

Please ensure your submission adheres to the following conditions:

  • The photography must be taken by you, of at least one ball-jointed doll themed around SPACE.
  • Photo editing programs (such as Adobe Lightroom, and Photoshop) may be used to enhance the photo. However, please remember the competition is focused on photography, not photo manipulation.
  • Please do not put text on your image.
  • You may submit up to 3 photographs to the competition.
  • Entries must not be discriminatory against any mental, physical, or economical disadvantages.
  • Please try to keep your entries PG rated.
  • Works must not invade one’s privacy.
  • Depictions of child prostitution, pornography, or abuse are strictly prohibited.
  • The entry must not disrespect anyone’s freedom of religion, politics, belief, occupation, sex, etc.
  • The entry must not be in breach of the law, public order, or morality.
  • Entries must not contain socially offensive content.
  • Entries must fit the contest purpose.
    Once an entry has been submitted, no further changes can be made to said entry.
  • All entrants who wish to receive SMASH! Art Competition prizes; MUST have a postal address within Australia.
    • If an Australian mailing address cannot be provided, the applicant will not be eligible to receive prizes from our competitions.
  • Display and use of photos:
    • Entries received for the competition may be on display within the convention over the course of SMASH! 2023, as well as during the prize winners announcement.
    • Photos submitted to the 2023 SMASH! BJD Photography Competition may be featured on SMASH! marketing, website and social media platforms. Any artworks featured will be fully credited to the artist.

If an entry does not meet all of these conditions, or if SMASH judges it to be inappropriate, your entry will not be considered.

NOTE: Applicants will not be notified of disqualification.

Specification

  • All entries must be uploaded via the submission form above
  • Please ensure that your artwork has been saved, photographed or scanned clearly.
  • Please name the file with your ‘ArtistName_PieceTitle’.
  • Files should be no more than 5MB large.
  • Preferred file formats are .JPG, .PNG or .PDF.

Please note that in submitting your piece, you also agree to allow SMASH! to use your piece for promotional purposes of future art events and competitions. Any artworks featured will be fully credited to the artist.

Submission

Once you have completed the submission, you should receive a confirmation of submission in your email. Then judging will once the convention begins, and the winners will be announced at the end of the convention as well!
